Flocking in a flowfield from flight404 and Vimeo.
The video work of Robert Hodgin is memorizing which can be seen on his site Flight404.com. But it is his “Flocking in a flowfield” video that illustrates the power of order through entropy. The idea of Flocking starts to provide a model for coordination with a complexity of members. Flocking, when understood, could become a design management strategy that manifest built environments with a system of flow and formations of materials.
Made me think about potentialities involving nanotechnolgy as applied to construction and deconstruction. Essentially the “flocking” of materials nanites to make and unmake structures. Huge implications. Need to reread Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson.
You can get it for iTunes as well. Check out Magnetosphere from Barbarian Software.

Simulations based on cellular automata technique have shown how nanites, with their simple action, could become a foundation for emergent structures in architecture. Chris Lucas discusses some of the building blocks for organization in his paper Automata – Agents of Life Within.
